"ABOLITION DE L'ESCLAVAGE"

150th Anniversary of Freeing of the Slaves in the French Colonies

UNESCO Headquarters - Paris, France
October 15 - November 1998

The Burns Institute For Visual Documentation, Inc. under the auspices of UNESCO, announces an exhibition on slavery to start its world tour at UNESCO headquarters in Paris at 7 Place de Fontenoy on October, 15, 1998.

Mr. Doudou Diene, Director of UNESCO’s Division of Intracultural Property and Chairman of the Slave Route Project is promoting the exhibit to bring attention to the problem of slavery in historical and current contexts. The exhibit will commemorate the 150th Aniversary of “Abolition de L’Esclavage”, the French Government’s freeing of the slaves in the French Colonies, May, 1848. By focusing on historic aspects of slavery using newly discovered and rarely seen mid nineteenth century photographs it is hoped that these visual artifacts of the slave trade will result in worldwide attention for the Slave Route Project and modern remnants of slavery. In the context of modern racism these photographs provide a visual background for understanding.

The center piece of the exhibit will be the daguerreotype from the Stanley B. Burns, M.D. Collection of the official ceremony for the freeing of the slaves in the French Colonies held in Martinique on May 24, 1848. Also included in the exhibit will be photographs depicting slaves in the United States as well as other localities. A photograph from the Burns Collection of a celebration related to the American Emancipation Proclamation will also be shown. The exhibit will travel to various institutions in countries participating in UNESCO’s, Slave Route Project.
